- I got to catch most of the Presidential debates over the weekend and I have to say that they were pretty interesting. Here are a few observations I had of a few of the candidates:
– I get the feeling that, instead of studying up on the issues for the debates, Mike Huckabee spends his time trying to think up clever one-liners.
– In times past he’s just looked like a lost old man but, John McCain is actually starting to seem presidential again. Of course, given his never-wavering support for the war, I could never vote for him, but I can see where he could be appealing to many.
– Mitt Romney did a respectable job of keeping his composure while getting ganged up on by his opponents, but his campaign may be nearing its end following that beat-down.
– Hillary is losing it fast and, no matter how hard she tries, her answers still seem terribly contrived. If she loses New Hampshire tomorrow, this may be the end of the road.
– Is anybody else hoping for an Obama/Edwards ticket? I keep loving Obama more and more everytime I see him and Edwards’ populist message is an excellent one in times as dark as these. I think someone else mentioned this on another blog, but wouldn’t it be something to have a Southern white man as the running mate of an African-American?
In Other News…
- What’s up with showing all of these toilet bowl games (Tulsa vs. Bowling Green in the GMAC Bowl??) in the days before the BCS Championship Game?
- Though the Buckeyes will look more respectable than they did last year against Florida, look for LSU to take them to school on how football is supposed to be played.
- I watched The Simpsons movie over the weekend and it was great, but it did seem like they just took a 30 minute episode and stretched it out over 90 minutes.
I also managed to catch most of the debate coverage over the weekend and find myself sharing a number of the thoughts you came away with…
Huckabee – I think he feels acting less-Presidential is gonna work. I think he’s wrong.
McCain – hearing things he’s willing to commit to just being a one-term Prez. I think this would be to not only “reassure” folks about the age issue but also paint a picture he’s so good he’d only need four years to clean up the “minor” mess W. has the nation in. Interesting “outside-the-box” marketing but too closely aligned to W. to be a factor.
Romney – geez, it surely was “everybody get the Mormon guy” wasn’t it? I think it’s because he keeps trying to paint himself as the “change” guy and distance himself from the current administration…which happens to be of the same party he belongs to.
Clinton – I do agree she may very well be D.O.A. already in New Hampshire. Amazing. Having Bill too close to the campaign just reminds some they really want him back in, not her…and others they don’t want anyone in the family back in.
Edwards – impressed me the most.
Obama – I can see why he is criticized as all sizzle and no steak but I haven’t seen enough of him to conclude he’s grossly unqualified. Your idea of Obama/Edwards works for me, but maybe the other way around?
After 31 bowl games, could anything be any more anti-climatic than an LSU home game? I think LSU will win easily, but good arguments (as usual) can be made for other schools more worthy of having a shot to play them in this mess known as the BCS.
Someone my wife works with had the same EXACT description of the Simpsons Movie.

The Romney backlash is a strange thing because he really is the prototypical Republican candidate, given that he is pro-business and shares many of the same values. I don’t know if being a Mormon is what scares people away or if it is the fact that he is “prototypical” and people are looking for someone different.
I’m a big fan of Edwards, too, and was really supporting him during his ’04 run. While Obama is my favorite, Edwards is a close second either of them. The partnership that they seemed to form against Hillary in the debate could bode well for their future together.
Matt, just posted an election-related blog and wanted to make sure you saw a New York Times Magazine article on the Mormon faith…and how it factors in to the equation in his ability to be elected…http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/06/magazine/06mormonism-t.html?ref=magazine
