Vegas – Day 1 April 30, 2008

The flight from Memphis (with a two hour stop in Houston) went without incident yesterday and we arrived in sin city last night. I’ve never been to Vegas before, so I was particularly struck by how stark and desolate the land around it is, especially when compared to the glitz and glam of the city.

It’s true, by the way, there are even slot machines in the airport so that you can start playing those slots as soon as you exit the airplane.

This will be an interesting week…

Being in the business world offers opportunities to go places and experience things that you may not do on a normal basis. At my place of work, I have been granted to opportunity to attend one conference per year for various organizations to help in my professional development. Last year, I and coworker went to Boston for a few days, but really didn’t have the ability to get out and see much of the city. This time, though, things will be different.

As you can tell from the title, I’ll be flying out this afternoon to Sin City itself, Las Vegas. It will be my first trip to this oasis in the Nevada desert, so I’m looking forward to whatever the next few days will hold. Diana is going to come along this time and we will be staying an extra night, so the two of us will not be returning until Saturday. Its not often that the two of us get several days and nights alone without kids, so we are pretty excited.

We’ll be staying at the Flamingo resort on the company’s dime, because that’s where the conference is being held. Since I’ve never been to the city before, I looked it up on Google Earth and found that it is directly on the Vegas strip, across the street from Caesar’s Palace and near all of the casinos and attractions.

Have any of you been to Vegas before? If so, what things do you suggest we see and do?

Ten For Tuesday: Summer Movie Review April 28, 2008

There is something about the hot, humid, carefree (well, sort of) days of summer that makes it easy to suspend your disbelief. It’s a time in which you can enter a world of explosions and mayhem that mercillessly bend and break the laws of physics in a land where high body counts and scantily clad women are the norm. Yes, that’s right, it’s time for summer movies. This weekend kicks of another season of high-octane, testosterone-fueled pieces of film that allow us to again enter the adolescent world of sex and violence and bad dialogue.

And I can’t deny it, I’ll surely be in line for at least some of the following summertime flicks.

None of the movies have been released yet and, because of the fact that I watch very little television, I haven’t seen many of the trailers for the upcoming slices of popcorn entertainment. That being the case, I believe that I am perfectly qualified to give a fair and balanced judgment on the value of several of the upcoming movies just from reading about them on IMDB. So, without further ado, here are my takes on ten summer movies, in order of their release, without having seen them.

10. Iron Man (May 2) – The movie that officially kicks off the summer is from a genre that we have come to be very (almost too) familiar with over the past few years – a comic book film. From what little I’ve seen, it seems to have a pretty cool look to it, but I’m just not convinced about having The Dude as a bad guy.
Verdict: Wait ’til it’s on Netflix

9. Speed Racer (May 9) – The Wachowski Brothers return from V for Vendetta and the Matrix trilogy with this? Really? As if Matrix Reloaded wasn’t bad enough?
Verdict: No Thanks

8. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (May 16) The cast returns from The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, for this version of the second book in C.S. Lewis’ popular series. I’m sure it will be another enjoyable, though not exceptional, romp through the mythical world of Narnia and its rather obvious Christian symbolism.
Verdict: Theater, but not for the opening.

7. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (May 23) – Harrison Ford resumes the role of archaeologist adventurer Indiana Jones 19 years after the last entry in the series. This time, Dr. Jones “becomes entangled in a Soviet plot to uncover the secret behind mysterious artifacts known as the Crystal Skulls.” Does anything induce nostalgia like Indiana Jones and the “evil” Soviet Union (I guess the Nazis must be gone by the time of this sequel). Steven Spielburg directs, George Lucas co-writes, and even Karen Allen, who played the Indy’s original love interest, Marion Ravenwood, in “Raiders,” returns. Even if this movie is terrible, it’s a must-see.
Verdict: I’m there, dude.

6. You Don’t Mess with Zohan (June 6) – I haven’t found Adam Sandler to be particularly funny in probably a decade and normally I wouldn’t even pause to consider another film of his directed by Dennis Dugan – the responsible party for both I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and The Benchwarmers. But, this film has another asset going for it that neither of those had – Judd Apatow as co-writer. Thusfar I am convinced that everything Apatow touches will be hilarious.
Verdict: Wait ’til it’s on Netflix

5. The Incredible Hulk (June 13) – Who came up with the idea of making another, separate Hulk movie just five years after the last one? Sure, this one stars Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, who is far cooler than Eric Bana, but I still don’t quite get the motivation for it. Also, director Louis Leterrier, whose only accomplishments as a film director consist of The Transporter and its sequel, isn’t exactly a ringing vote of confidence.
Verdict: Ummm…not sure, but I’ll at least wait for Netflix.

4. The Happening (June 13) – M. Night Shyamalan has been in quite a slump since the incredibly underwhelming end of Signs, so I have trouble getting excited for the man who was once trumpeted as the next Hitchcock. The plot synopsis reads: A paranoid thriller about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity. But, that tells me little – will this be a return to Sixth Sense/Unbreakable form or will it be another Lady in the Water debacle?
Verdict: Wait ’til it’s on Netflix

3. Hellboy II: The Golden Army (July 11) – While I’m not exactly convinced that Hellboy needed a sequel, it was a fairly enjoyable film and I’ve turned into a big fan director Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth).
Verdict: Wati ’til it’s on Netflix

2. The Dark Knight (July 18 ) – Christopher Nolan’s second film in the Batman canon is certain to be another surreal juggernaut on par with, if not even surpassing his first installment, Batman Begins. Christian Bale returns to the role of Bruce Wayne with the late Heath Ledger donning the maniacal persona of the Joker and stepping into the huge shoes of Jack Nicholson’s insane performance in Tim Burton’s 1989 film.
Verdict: I’m there, dude.

1. Pineapple Express (August 8 ) – Okay, it stars and was co-written by Seth Rogen and it was produced by Judd Apatow (both of 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad fame). It’s plot outline reads: A stoner and his dealer are forced to go on the run from the police after the pothead witnesses a cop commit a murder. This is destined to be another comedic classic.
Verdict: Definitely a must-see, but maybe not in the theater.

The film that I think sounds the best for the upcoming summer movie season is a little indie feature (imagine that) whose description sounds like it could really be something exceptional. Son of Rambow is a British comedy from director Garth Jennings, who gave us the underwhelming Hitchhiker’s Guide the the Galaxy, but was also involved with the hilarious Edgar White/Simon Pegg features Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. This movie is titled Son of Rambow and its plot reads as follows: A shy boy growing up in a sheltered British community makes an unlikely collaborator with his rough-and-tumble schoolmate in his attempt to film his own shot-by-shot version of Rambo: First Blood.
Verdict: Definitely a must-see, but most likely a Netflix pick-up.

What else should be included in the list?

Despite the seemingly constant watery barrage from the heavens above, we were finally able to begin our garden project this weekend. Friday, I sent out an email correspondence to those who have expressed an interest in participating that said we would not begin work if it rained.

Well, as seems to happen every time we make plans to till, it rained, but I decided to check it out anyway Saturday morning. with the hope that, because our garden spot is slightly higher than the ground around it, the water would roll off of it and not sink too deeply into the soil. As it turns out, we were right.

It was short notice on a Saturday, but we still had a few hardy volunteers that came out and worked hard from 8:00 that morning until late into the afternoon. When our task for the day was complete, we had a nice 75′ x 50′ spot of tilled earth ready to be planted.

And, you know, there is something rewarding about manual labor that my normal white-collar job doesn’t offer. There’s something about finishing a day sore and sunburnt, with dirt-caked clothes and earth-stained hands, seeing the actual product of your labor before you that lends a great feeling of satisfaction.

Now, I’m an unapologetic, diehard fan of Motley Crue going back to my preteen years in the late 80’s, and I have to say they just blew the roof off with their latest song. I just downloaded “Saints of Los Angeles” from Itunes and it is just incredible….like old times, man…

I know it’s not Friday, but I’ve just got the post the video for it. Enjoy.

One of the really cool things about blogging on WordPress is the ability to see the search terms that lead other people to my blog – some of them tend to be rather strange. Here are just a few of them from the last week:

Easter wishes in Swahili

Viking circles

Deconstruction of Drive-By Truckers

Picture of a pulley giving a kid a wedgie

Most intelligent words of all time

The “Worst” Foods in America? April 24, 2008

A new article in Men’s Health magazine has ranked the 20 worst foods in America – not defined by taste, of course, but rather by their incredibly unhealthy properties. Now I have to admit that I’ve never had the majority of the foods on the list, but there were a few that I found to be particularly disheartening.

We have an On The Border within walking distance of our house in Southaven, but this study placed 3 of their offerings among the 20 worst – more than any other restaurant listed. Their worst offendors included:
Worst Salad: Grande Taco Salad (1,450 calories, 102 g fat)
Worst Nachos: Stacked Border Nachos (2,740 calories, 166 g fat)
And most bothersome of all, my personal favorite dish at said eating establishment:
Worst Fish Entree: Fish Tacos (2,100 calories, 130 g fat)

Also included was another of my favorite appetizers of times past – especially when I worked as a steak house cook in college. This one is actually for a dish at Chili’s, but I’m sure it is the same as the one we used to chow down on at Colton’s:
Worst Starter: Awesome Blossom (2,710 calories, 203 g fat)

But, perhaps the very most troubling food on the list was the one from Outback Steakhouse that this magazine rated as the overall worst:
Worst Food in America: Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing (2,900 calories, 182 g fat)

Who could have ever guessed that french fries covered with melted cheese and bacon, with a bowl of fat-filled ranch dressing on the side was not healthy!

Mmmm….3:30 and now I’m hungry…

Blame it on the Rain April 24, 2008

Here in Memphis many of us from the Holmes Road Church of Christ are looking at the dark, cloudy skies above and hoping that, for once, the inevitable will pass us by. Our community garden project has been stuck in limbo for the past two weeks as shower after shower has soaked our fertile Delta ground and kept our tillers at bay. Will it happen again?

According to the most recent weather report I’ve seen, there is a 50% chance of rain today, though a quick glance outside would cause that probability to dramatically increase. I’m on pins and needles sitting inside my small cubicle, waiting for either another disappointment or for our fortunes to finally turn…

P.S. Do I lose cool points for using a title from a Milli Vanilli song? I thought about grabbing one from the precipitation-obsessed Creedence (Who’ll Stop the Rain?, Have You Even Seen the Rain?), but passed for some reason or another.

I should have known it was a bad idea to try and start a series when I’ve been as busy as I have been lately. Don’t worry, I’ll get back to my meandering remarks on personal salvation and the social gospel one of these days when I have the time to think about it a little bit. Between my busy week at work, an all-morning class (also for work), and the upcoming community garden project I find myself without many words….

In the meantime, I’ve been listening to Black Mountain’s “In The Future,” in all of their prog-rock glory. It’s worth a listen if you’re an emusic subscriber. So, I’m just going to slip my headphones back on and get back to work. Hope you all have a good day and I promise to come back with something at least remotely interesting soon.
