Deep Fried Love August 6, 2008

I’m not sure why there is such a prevalence of deep fried food in the South. I don’t know the reason for the allure of the flour-battered culinary wonder dripping with hot oil. But, I sure do like it.

I was thinking about it some during our trip to Greenwood as I partook of the greasy gastronomic marvels set before me – most notably, the excellent sweet tea marinated fried chicken, which caused by thirty year old heart to beat noticeably faster – and tried to just count the many, many dishes prepared in this manner that I’ve devoured in my life.

When it comes to meats, we, of course, all eat our chicken and fish fried, though the former is battered with flour while the latter with corn meal. We fry pork chops and beef, especially in form of country fried steaks, and our family had a deep fried turkey a few years ago as a holiday dinner. I’ve eaten fried deer, rabbit, squirrel, frogs, and Lord knows what other types of wild creatures.

We love our fried okra and growing up I remember eating a lot of fried yellow squash and zucchini. I grew to love fried corn on the cob thanks to the Searcy Dixie Cafe and now I love some fried green tomatoes with a little ranch dressing (I had a fried green tomato BLT on our trip and it was excellent).

Fried twinkies have evolved from punchline to staple when visiting the fair and they’ve been joined by nearly every other type of candy imaginable.

You just can’t beat good Southern cooking…

Sweet tea marinated chicken is simply brilliant.

That sounds really, really good. I’ll have to try to find some.

It was awesome…but probably not the healthiest thing I’ve eaten…
