The End of the Rope… November 30, 2008

To say that the past week has been incredibly stressful and tiring would be a massive understatement.

Yeah, I know that I’m not the one confined to a bed with an ever-growing fetus in my (nonexistent) uterus. I know that I’m not the one who has been suffering regular contractions for two weeks despite four trips to the hospital by doctor’s order. I know that I’m not the one being poked and prodded and I’m not the one who is unable to do even the simplest of tasks for an extended period of time due to pain and fatigue. And it is for those reasons that I hesitate to write anything about my struggles or perceptions of our current state, for I do not want to sound as though I am being whiny or petty. But, then again, this is my blog, so if you think I’m being a crybaby, well….get over it.

The days of this so-called Thanksgiving “break” have been anything but restful. I love my girls, but after five days away from their normally structured environment with little to do in their eyes but pick at each other and then wail with uncontrolled, rolling sobs, I’m ready to move them to Nebraska. Prior to the break last week, I was having some trouble keeping up with the household tasks while keeping dinner on the table, kids from killing each other, and working in my relatively stressful 45-50 hour a week job, but, unbeknownst to me, that would seem rather pleasant when compared to the past few days which have had a distinct resemblance to Dante’s Ninth Circle.

As a somewhat normal masculine figure, I tend to be hardheaded about asking for help from others, partly stemming from the idea that I do not want to bother them and partly because of this indwelling individual fantasy, most likely stemming from our distinctive American myths, in which I, as an individual, can solve all of my own problems. So, with that in mind, I put myself to this near-impossibly large job alone.

And today it all came crashing down.

This morning after church I was talking with one of our best friends, Beth, about how we were doing and whether or not we needed anything. I began to answer with the same, rote statement that I give everyone, “Fine,…blah, blah, blah,” when a sudden realization blasted into my consciousness with a force like a bomb. It was then that I realized I was lying to her, to everyone, to myself. I can’t do it alone and it took a near-emotional meltdown for me to come to grips with it.

By later that afternoon, someone had set up meals for the week, people had volunteered to keep the girls for us and/or to help set up Jackson’s room – a task that we had yet to be done due to the fact that we thought there would be more time – and my mom is coming to stay with us for a few days to help right the ship.

To her credit, Diana (who is much smarter than me about these types of things) was well ahead of me and had already had people come to help with the housecleaning and do the long-neglected yardwork.

So, for this Thanksgiving weekend, I am most thankful of all to our friends and family for rallying around us, and helping to shoulder that stressful burden in our time of need. I’m thankful for Leanna for cleaning places in our home that had not been touched in an embarrassingly long time. I’m thankful to Carl for spending an entire day meticulously straightening up our yard and then refusing payment. I’m thankful for Ryan & Beth for taking our kids this afternoon and allowing me to work in peace and even rest a bit. I’m thankful for Chance & Teneshia for having us into their home to eat a wonderful Thanksgiving meal with their family and also for their willingness to take the girls at a moment’s notice for an undetermined time when we race to the hospital. And we are thankful for all of those who have shown us their support and love over the past week.

We are blessed to have you all and we love you very much.

Last night:
More pre-term labor, another trip to the hospital, 2 more shots of terbutaline, and no Jackson yet. 40% effacement, but no dilation.

The waiting is the hardest part…

And I am so thankful for our friends Chance and Teneshia, who took the girls with almost no notice for the night without hesitation. We owe them big time.

With Thanksgiving officially behind us and having awoken from our tryptophan induced slumber, we now turn our attention to the next occasion gracing our calendar, that most wonderful time of the year, Christmas. And what better way is there to kick off the yuletide cheer than this:

I am thankful for good friends.

With Diana being placed on strict bedrest at the end of last week, we were not quite sure what our Thanksgiving holiday would consist of. It was certain that traveling 130 miles to central Arkansas was definitely off the list, so it began to look more and more likely that our dinner would consist of toast, popcorn, and jellybeans (a la A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving). But, without us having to ask or even really bringing it up, some of our beloved friends came to the rescue.

Chance and Teneshia, along with their adorable daughters, are new members of our south Memphis congregation, having been there only about 2 months or so. In sharp contrast to us, they are both former college athletes at the University of Memphis (he in football and she in track) and are lifetime urban dwellers (where Diana is from the endless suburbia of the California coast and I grew up down a gravel road in small town Arkansas), but somehow our families clicked and for the past several weeks we have been nearly inseparable. We are about the same age (they are a couple of years younger than us) and our kids are the same ages (6 and 3), and we just all really enjoy each other’s company.

When it became apparent that we were not going to be traversing the state of Arkansas for our turkey day, Teneshia immediately invited us to their home, stating that there would, of course, be plenty of food for all of us. So, today we drove over to our very good friends’ Memphis home around south Third Street and enjoyed a cornucopia of home-cooked Thanksgiving staples – turkey and dressing and greens (she made collard and I brought turnip) and a table full of dessert. It was a great feast and one for which I am very thankful.

ARE071

Twas the day before Thanksgiving
And on my office floor
Lights were out, cubes were empty
The morning was a bore

I stared at my screen
Watching time slip away
Wondering when I could escape
For the rest of the day

The hallway is empty
With few voices to be heard
I want to leap from the window
And fly away like a bird

But, alas, I remain
In my desolate station
Just wishing I had
A few more days of vacation!

According to the latest rankings by Congressional Quarterly, the Memphis metro area ranks number 2 in the nation when it comes to crime rate, coming in just behind Arkansas’ Edenic garden spot, Pine Bluff. If we just try a little harder, maybe, just maybe, we can pull into that number one spot.

- I just want to start by saying thank you to the New York Jets for proving what I have thought for the past several weeks – the Tennessee Titans are frauds. They should win their next three matchups against the abysmal Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, and Houston Texans, but don’t be surprised if they lose their last two versus Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. They’ll win their division and may get a first round bye, but after that it’s one-and-done for Jeff Fisher’s squad.

- The big question for those of us who are die hard Cowboys fans is whether or not our team has finally turned the corner. With Tony Romo back and playing at an elite level (341 yards, 3 TDs, 0 Ints yesterday), that Super Bowl victory that predicted at the beginning of the season doesn’t seem so far fetched anymore. Next week should be a relatively easy win against the 2-9 Seahawks, but with three other teams knocking on the door of the playoffs lined up next (Pittsburgh, New York Giants, and Baltimore), it will be a tough road.

- If there is one thing we’ve learned this season, it is that we can never, ever doubt Bill Bilicheck’s ability to coach a team to victory. I mean, he’s even turned Matt Cassel into a veritable star quarterback, with 815 yards passing, 6 touchdowns and only 1 interception over the past two weeks against quality opponents (New York Jets and Miami). Another playoff appearance is definitely within their reach.

- With berths in the BCS Championship Game looming large, the last weeks of the season take on a special significance for some teams. Let’s take a look at the top contenders:

o Though Alabama remains the lone undefeated team in college football with a chance at BCS Championship glory (sorry Utah fans), I remain skeptical of the team that earlier struggled against Kentucky and Ole Miss. They must not overlook this week’s matchup against interstate rival Auburn, but even if the Crimson Tide come out on top, an SEC Championship against Florida, arguably the best team in America, may prove to be their undoing.

o Following Florida’s inexplicable September 27 loss to Ole Miss, no team has played better than this Tim Tebow-led Gators squad. If they can come out of Florida State with a victory next weekend, the December 6 SEC Championship will hold their ticket to their secondBCS Championship Game in three years.

o The logjam at the top of the Big 12 standings will no doubt leave some fans smiling and some fuming.

 If Texas Tech defeats Baylor (as they surely should) and Oklahoma falls, they will advance to the Big 12 Championship Game against Missouri, though their 44 point loss to Oklahoma will most likely leave them out of the BCS Championship.

 Texas is currently number 2 in the BCS standings by a slight margin and they should defeat Texas A&M handily this weekend, but, with Oklahoma leaping ahead of them in both the AP and Coaches polls this week, they stand to lose their Championship bid even with a victory. If Texas Tech falls to the Bears and the Lonhorns send the Aggies home, Texas will advance to the conference title game and a more probable championship bid.

 Oklahoma has in-state rival and 12th ranked Oklahoma State left on their schedule. A convincing win over the Cowboys will likely vault the Sooners to number 2 in the BCS standings, despite their earlier loss to Texas. Oklahoma will advance to the conference title game with a Texas loss.

o My prediction: Alabama is exposed as the flawed team they are in the SEC Championship game by Florida and Oklahoma jumps past Texas to represent the Big 12 in the BCS Championship.

- As if this year wasn’t bad enough for Razorback fans, Saturday’s loss to Mississippi State just cemented our spot as the worst team in the SEC. Ouch.

In 1991, I was 14 years old and in the 8th grade at Beebe Junior High. The grunge scene had not yet taken hold of rural Arkansas, so we were still listening to those late 80’s purveyors of decadence like Guns N’ Roses and Motley Crue. Soon, though, that era would pass for those of us in tune with the music world as we embraced the sludge-like riffs from Seattle and the multitude of other styles moving to the forefront. We may even pinpoint the end on the aforementioned Guns N’ Roses, whose overwrought and indulgent Use Your Illusion albums ran the gamut from incredible to forgettable to just plain bad.

Now it is 2008, 17 years after that time of big hair and skin-tight leather pants. The world of music has changed and changed and changed again. The Use Your Illusion follow-up, Chinese Democracy, began to be talked about in the mid-90’s, but the secretive nature of Rose kept it under wraps for years as he finetuned it again and again looking for some elusive perfection.

Well, it’s here. This weekend, the long-awaited and perhaps unjustly maligned project is finally coming to light. This week I purchased the title song of the coming album, Chinese Democracy, and I was pleasantly surprised. It may not be Paradise City or Welcome to the Jungle, it may not have the unmistakable guitar playing of Slash, but it still has a certain vintage sound to it, from Axl’s opening scream onward. Check out the new tune below.
