My Ipod contains over 5,400 songs, so anytime I hit “Shuffle Songs” it is interesting to see what comes up. Because of the nature of my work, I am able to listen to music through headphones most of the time, so naturally I do so and I thought I would share with you what came up when I “shuffled” today. Enjoy.

Bruce Springsteen – Red Headed Woman (live)
Vampire Weekend – I Stand Corrected
Johnny Cash – Desperado
Jay-Z – Ain’t No *****
John Hiatt – Paper Thin
U2 – Bullet the Blue Sky
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Suck My Kiss
Weezer – No One Else
Pearl Jam – I Got **** (live)
Public Enemy – Caught, Can We Get A Witness?
Kings of Leon – On Call
The Black Crowes – Blackberry
Los Campesinos – Don’t Tell Me To Do The Math(s)
Liz Phair – Glory
My Morning Jacket – Off the Record
Willie Nelson – Can I Sleep In Your Arms
Bob Marley & the Wailers – One Love…People Get Ready
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – Waiting for Tonight
Portishead – Glory Bos
The Decemberists – Los Angeles, I’m Yours
Wilco – Shake It Off
Widespread Panic – Raise the Roof
The Raconteurs – Salute Your Solution
Josh Ritter – To the Dogs or Whoever
Smashing Pumpkins – Galapogos
Merle Haggard – Are The Good Times Really Over?
The Black Keys – The Desperate Man
Sufjan Stevens – Flint (For the Unemployed and Underpaid)
R.E.M. – Sweetness Follows
John Fogerty – Somebody Help Me

And yes, that was a strange transition from Johnny Cash covering “Desperado” to Jay-Z.

I’m a huge fan of Neko Case (or, as she’s known in my house, “the other woman”), so I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of her latest album. NPR has been streaming the album prior to its release, so I was able to listen to it earlier this week and let me just tell you, it is great. Below is a live performance of one of the new songs.

I just wanted to take a moment to give a big Words of Wisdom shout-out to my good friend Chance, the assistant coach for the Bishop Byrne Lady Red Knights high school basket ball team. This evening they will face off against local rival Lausanne (the defending champs) for the Division 2-A State Championship in Nashville. I wish we could be there, but I’ll be cheering them on from here in Memphis and checking the score as I can.

Let’s Go Lady Red Knights!

Every city in America has treasures that oftentimes go unheralded by the masses and I wanted to just take a moment to tell you about one such jewel here in Memphis. As one scans their tuner across the radio waves a vast assortment of stations tickle the ear. At any one time you may find rock or hip-hop, talk or pop or country tunes to please the mind and the soul, but, upon further listening and scanning, something starts to become abundantly clear – it is all the same. Soon one begins to see the homogeneity of each station for each genre of music as they play the same list of songs over and over again. It becomes like some strange version of hell where one is given an Ipod that only has a certain number of tunes that are set on repeat for all eternity. Frantically you search through the stations, in pursuit of some small bit of originality, for some savior to rescue you from a land of bland uniformity.

Then, just before giving in and resigning yourself to a life of music mediocrity, a sound, something strange and different, rises from cold, dead speakers. You quickly realize that this is not a normal radio station. There are no former American Idols. There is no Lil’ Wayne. There are no anonymous psuedo-country acts.

In a land of conformity, there is a giant standing tall – 89.9 WEVL, volunteer radio. Because the station is run by volunteers and survives on donations from the general public, it is not beholden to record companies looking to sell their latest uninteresting dreck. The variety of shows presented by these unpaid, music-loving DJs run the gamut from loud indie rock to local blues acts to classic country to more offbeat fare like zydeco, reggae, and celtic music. My personal favorite program is Janet’s Planet, a Wednesday morning show that plays some of the best (and noisiest) indie rock.

It is truly the only reason I need to own a radio. If you are ever in Memphis you should check it out.

So, is Obama really a Hitler-esque, bisexual, antichrist?

In his response to Obama’s speech tonight Bobby Jindal called funding the monitoring of volcanoes “irresponsible.”

According to a recent report by Nielsen & Co., Americans are watching more television than ever – around 151 hours per month, which equates to an average of around 5 hours per day.

I have to admit to being totally baffled by this finding. Come on, what do these people watch? Outside of my obsession with watching The Office religiously (30 min. per week), there is nothing else that I would consider “can’t-miss” television. I was once a fairly regular viewer of The Daily Show, but now that I am subject to Jackson’s wake-up call that has been replaced by an extra 30 minutes of blissful sleep.

I guess I just can’t imagine that anyone could find 151 hours of compelling television each month. What about you? Do you find that surprising too or are you one of those who stay glued to the TV 5 hours per day? Am I completely missing something that I should be watching?

On Circumventing Introversion Through Blogging February 23, 2009

For three years now, the first 2 at Yahoo 360 and the last 1+ on WordPress, I have been putting my thoughts on everything from the world of entertainment to the political issues of the day to my somewhat unorthodox beliefs on faith and society upon this lifeless computer screen for all the world to read, and I am very thankful for everyone who has tuned into my meandering thoughts and become a part of this small community in the ever-expanding blogosphere. It has become a very important and therapeutic piece of my life through which, for once, I feel as though I can actually express my thoughts, and for that I am incredibly grateful.

Face-to-face I am not a talkative, outspoken sort of person. With the exception of only a handful of individuals in my life, my inner thought processes had remained hidden from public view, locked away in the well-guarded vault of my mind. Prior to blogging and opening my soul to the cyber-world, my introversion knew few bounds.

So, why do I feel the freedom to be so much more open in writing rather than in person?

In my case, I think it comes down to a perceived lack of ability to answer coherently from the top of my head, which has led to a very non-confrontational attitude toward others, even those with whom I vehemently disagree, in a face-to-face setting. My deficiency in this area may be partly subconscious stemming from failed discussions in the past due to my being more of a contemplative, questioning thinker instead of a shoot-from-the-hip bumper sticker type, but much of it comes from a true inability to process information quickly which can be easily seen as a product of having suffered massive head trauma. It is this condition, which I later learned was actually classified as a learning disability, that keeps me silent in most situations. Over the past almost fifteen years, I’ve learned the hard way that my brain doesn’t store information like it used to or like others do. So, if I choose to engage in any type of discussion, from Sunday school to personal conversation, I find myself being particularly guarded. Too many times I have found myself on the receiving end of an opposing debater’s verbal onslaught, picking apart the tiniest of phrases in an effort to disprove whatever statement I might have made and to make spectacle of the lack of information I am able to spout off at any give time.

Thus, I choose to write my thoughts and feelings. Over the past three years this outlet has allowed me to express myself in ways that I have never really done before. I’m thankful for the opportunity to write and I’m thankful for those of you who choose to read. It’s really helped this introvert to come out of his shell a bit….just don’t expect me to speak up in Sunday school anytime soon…
