According to PNC Wealth Management, if a person bought everything from the 12 Days of Christmas for their true love, it would cost them $87,403. This is an increase of only $794 from last year.

They broke down the cost estimate as follows:

1 Partridge: $10
1 Pear Tree: $150
2 Turtle Doves: $56
3 French Hens: $45
4 Calling Birds: $600
5 Golden Rings: $500
6 Geese a-Laying: $150
7 Swans a-Swimming: $5,250
8 Maids a-Milking: $58
9 Ladies Dancing (per performance): $5,473
10 Lords a-Leaping (per performance): $4,414
11 Pipers Piping (per performance): $2,285
12 Drummers Drumming (per performance): $2,475

Personally, I’d rather have the $87,403.

Seeing The Hostage November 30, 2009

It’s no secret how much I love music, particularly when played live, and I’ve always wanted to be involved in some way. Though I have nice guitars and took lessons for a few years as a teen, it’s never been an art that I’ve tried to excel at, and as the years have gone by and my interests have widened, I’ve found less and less time to practice. So, given that I am in my 30s, don’t practice very often, and the last and only time I played publically in a band was May Day 1996, the rock star dream has been mercifully put to rest, but the desire to somehow be involved remains.

A few months ago, I met guy named Jeremy Jinkerson through an acquaintance and found out that he plays in a local band. Upon talking to him for a time, it became apparent that we shared many of the same music interests. We exchanged contact information and have been in touch ever since. Over the next few months I missed several of their shows for one reason or another, but I was finally able to catch them this past Wednesday at the New Daisy theater and let me tell you it was great.

The band is called The Hostage and they play a brand of progressive rock that, to me, brings about thoughts of a mixture of Tool and the Smashing Pumpkins. That night they were one of several bands playing, but I felt as though they held their own and did quite well. The band is young and energetic, their songs sounded great (despite being in the cavernous New Daisy), and I found it to be an all-around enjoyable experience. Singer/guitarist Julian Stanz earns bonus points for using a toy laser gun for sound effects – that was really cool.

Both before and after the show I had the opportunity to visit with the band and they were very friendly and came across as genuinely flattered to speak with someone who came to the show for the sole purpose of seeing them. I told them I thought they sounded great and expressed my desire to help them in whatever way I could, thus bringing you today’s blog entry. So, consider this my seal of approval for local Memphis treasure, The Hostage, and I look forward to hearing more from them in the future.

Below is a video of one of their past performances that I found on YouTube. They actually sounded better than this last week, but you can get an idea of their sound with this one.

Thanksgiving with an Alien November 26, 2009

Last night while lying in bed I had the strangest experience. There was a light outside the bedroom window and this unnatural humming sound. Diana lay sound asleep, so I quietly crept over to the glass so as to keep from waking her. What I saw came as a complete surprise.

On my front lawn sat a flying saucer with lights whirring about like a disco ball in the dark November night. Suddenly, a door opened and out stepped an honest-to-God alien. The short-statured fellow looked just how you might imagine, with green skin and antennae and three eyes! Though its mouth didn’t move, I suddenly heard a voice echoing about in my head.

“Hello Earthling. We have traveled many light years across the galaxy to see the magnificent culture of your planet.”

“Really?”

“Yes. Tell me about your planet, Earthling.”

“Well, umm…,” my thoughts were clouded for a moment with questions of how one describes an entire world to an outside creature. Finally I blurted out, “Tomorrow is Thanksgiving.”

“What is this Thanksgiving?”

“Well, it’s a time when we gather around with friends and family for a big meal and to give thanks for all that we have.”

“I see, and what do you Earthlings eat for this Thanksgiving meal?”

“We usually have a turkey,” seeing the look of confusion in the creature’s three eyes I continued, “it’s a bird. We buy a bird that has been killed and has had its feathers plucked.”

An obvious look of revulsion suddenly flashed across the alien’s face, “A bird?”

“Yeah, we take the bird and shove stuffing up its rear end and roast it in the oven.”

“That sounds horrible!”

“Oh no, actually its quite good. We eat a big meal of turkey and other dishes together then we lay around and watch football.”

“What is this football?”

“Why it’s a game played by men with a ball made from a pig skin.”

“So, after stuffing things in the rear end of a dead bird and eating it you lay around and watch grown men play a game with a pig carcass?”

“Yeah, but some people go deer hunting as well.”

“Deer hunting?”

“Yeah, that’s where you sit in a tree and wait for a deer to walk below you. When it does, you shoot it, cut it’s head off and stick it on the wall.”

A look of horror flashed across the aliens three eyes and, in a moment, it and the flying saucer were gone, never to be seen again.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!

“As president, I believe that robotics can inspire young people to pursue science and engineering. And I also want to keep an eye on thos robots in case they try anything.”

I’m glad to know we have a president who takes the doomsday scenario of a robot uprising seriously.

I love Thanksgiving. I love turkey and dressing and all the trimmings. I love the pies and cakes that only appear at this time of year. I love getting together with friends and with family to celebrate this special day of expressing our thankfulness.

But, on this day before the big holiday, there is one thing that is missing – music. So, I need your help. What songs would you include on a Thanksgiving playlist? I just did a quick look through my Ipod and came up with two tunes:
Led Zeppelin – Thank You
My Morning Jacket – Thank You Too!

But, I’m sure there are plenty of other songs that could be included. What do you suggest?

Unsure About a Surge November 24, 2009

Today President Obama announced an increase in troop levels to “finish the job” in the 8 year old Afghanistan war and for once I find myself questioning the decision. Sure, I know that he has far more information than any of us, including know-it-all pundits, but the idea of continuing a war that has dragged on for so long and cost many American lives and piles of money, just doesn’t seem like a great idea.

I’m sure that part of my reluctance stems from the book I’m currently reading, Jon Krakauer’s latest tome, Where Men Find Glory, which tells the story of Pat Tillman while juxtaposing an account of Afghan history, particularly that which involves the root of Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

Krakauer makes it quite clear that he believes an Afghan war to be impossible to win and he states his case quite persuasively. So, I can’t help but question a decision to continue trudging along in a war that is likely going to end in failure (if there is such a thing as “winning” a war anyway).

What do you think?

If you haven’t seen Saturday Night Live’s 2012 video on Sarah Palin you should check it out. Keith Olbermann called it Sarahpocalypse last night and I think that was a pretty good description.

It’s no secret that I am a huge supporter of the public school system in this country and I believe, with few exceptions, that parents do a terrible disservice by keeping their children out of the real world situations afforded by public school. My oldest daughter, Rachel, is in 2nd grade this year and next year Bekah will begin her own educational journey at our local elementary school in the DeSoto County school district.

Now, I say all of this because I want to brag a bit about an article I read in the Commerical Appeal today stating that our district received a rating of High-Performing from the Mississippi Department of Education. Being the largest district in the state (31,000 students), this is an especially good achievement by the schools and I am happy that my family is a part of it.

Kids can do some stupid things.

You know what I mean. There comes a time (or in most cases, several times) during the early concrete operational stage of cognitive development when one’s sketchy sense of judgment slips and they end up either getting hurt or hurting someone else. Dumb choices are a human rite of passage.

About 25 or so years ago, back when I walked those hallowed halls of Beebe Elementary School, I experienced one of these lapses in judgment. I was sleeping over at my friend Dustin’s house when we got the wild idea sometime in the middle of the night to go out and ride bicycles up and down his street. This was quite a treat for me because Dustin lived in town, where they actually had paved roads, which were much faster and less treacherous than the gravel roads around my home. So, for whatever reason, the two of us rode up and down his street in the middle of the night without a care in the world…until the unthinkable happened.

As I biked down the dimly lit street, I didn’t notice the small pickup truck parked on the side of the road. I didn’t see the rapidly approaching tailgate that was right at face level. No, I was too busy chatting away about whatever 8 year old boys talk about and was therefore unconcerned with my surroundings.

I don’t know what I thought when I hit the truck face first, nor am I aware of the words that were spoken. But, when I finally realized what had happened, there was blood running down my chin and my mouth hurt something terrible. We made our way back to his house where his parents called my parents to take me to the emergency room. I seem to remember someone mentioning the word “stitches” and, being petrified with fear, I answered with “No, all I need is a band-aid!”

But, they were right. I did need stitches, two of them in my bottom lip where my front teeth had bitten through. In addition to that, I chipped a few teeth that I also had to have fixed in one of the only dental procedures I’ve ever had to endure.

So, you are probably wondering what the reason for this story is. You may be contemplating why I would regale you with tales of ER visits from more than 2 decades ago. Well, around a month ago, I looked in the mirror and noticed a large chip in one of my top front teeth. At first I was a bit shocked, for I knew that I hadn’t chipped a tooth recently, but then I realized this was one of the filling from those many years ago. At some time, the filling had popped out and disappeared, maybe even while I was sleeping one night. Today, I will be returning to the dentist, which is definitely not my idea of a good time, to have my front tooth fixed again. But, hey, if it lasts another 25 years I can’t complain too much.
