My older daughter’s new favorite song that she asks to hear over and over again is Outkast’s “Hey Ya!” and though I’ve always liked it and certainly can’t complain after the nonstop Bieber-athon we’ve endured at home, after listening to it several times it grows a bit tiresome. Last night on our way to church, we went through it twice and I was beginning to get a little weary of hearing it, so when she asked to hear it again on the way home, I told her in my commanding, fatherly voice, “One more time. That’s all.”
We listened again as Big Boi and Andre 3000 tore through their Southern rap anthem, with Rachel trying her best to keep up and wanting to “shake it like a polaroid picture,” while Bekah and JD bounced along in their seats. Finally the song ended and, as would be expected, she began begging, pleading in her whiniest little voice to hear it yet again.
We stopped at a red light and I quickly scanned through part of my iPod, but with so little time I found another album in close alphabetic proximity and chose it. It was something that I thought might interest them, for the novelty of it if nothing else, for this band was none other than Passenger Jones, the group fronted by our good friend and priest.
The song began and soon after the singing started, I decided to see if they knew why I chose this. “Girls,” I asked, “Does this voice sound familiar?”
“Uh, no.”
“Are you sure? You don’t think it sounds like somebody you know?”
Rachel and Bekah just shrugged their shoulders apathetically.
“Girls, this is Father Patrick. It’s his band.”
Suddenly their interest was piqued, I glanced in the rearview mirror and saw Rachel wide-eyed with wonder at my sudden proclamation.
“So,” she began, choosing her words carefully, “that means our priest is famous!”
I laughed out loud and nodded to her, “I don’t know if I would say that, but he is in a band that made an album.”
“Well, yeah,” she stated back at me as if I was the most ignorant person on the earth, “That means he’s famous.”
Maybe she’ll ask him for an autograph next Sunday…
of course I’m famous!
If only it was that easy.
I need to listen to it. . .
