trackback
For a little over a week we’ve been working on potty training our two year old, JD, and for the most part it has been wildly successful. Sure, he’s not up to going number 2 yet, but the boy has easily caught on to peeing. As he uses the potty, he is allowed to put a “Cars” sticker on his chart and have a piece of candy, and these have proven to be worthy and wanted prizes.
But, he’s a smart kid and he likes candy.
JD: Daddy, I gotta go potty.
Me: Again? But you just went a little bit ago and you’ve already gone 9 times today.
JD (holding himself): I gotta go!
Me: Okay, but I think you’re having too much candy. How about we skip it this time?
The kid stops and looks up at me with a stone cold serious look on his face.
JD: No. I use potty. You give me candy. You said.
Me: Yeah, but.
JD (starting to cry): But you said!
Me (sighing): Okay, whatever.
And he uses it. Again.

Thankfully, we received a Halloween box from grandma that had non-chocolate candy in it. It’s not wise to give milk chocolate to a kid who’s got lactose issues. Especially while potty training…
